Children’s Hospital Boston – Presentation
So, as you know, or probably do at least, I went to Boston this summer to visit their Children’s Hospital, which so happens to be one of the best of its kind. It was an absolutely fantastic experience. Just one problem – now I have to give a presentation to some insanely clever people in thanks for their contribution towards my expenses.
Everyone who knows me is well aware that I am not a public speaker.
I do feel though, that I should probably make an effort to get better at giving presentations, since, regretfully, I expect it is something that I will have to do a lot in the future.
So, here you’ll find my latest draft as to what I’ll be talking about this weekend to the Medical Alumni of Christ’s College, Cambridge. This is going to be a car crash.
Ratehall a3
Orange
I think Ratehall might be a tiny bit too orange. I’ll tone that down when I get back. Hopefully, I’ll get the first version of it finished soon too, there’s not too much more work to do actually. Then there can be a period of testing before October!
Big devices, small devices, and tiny devices
Wow, just finished updating hamdev.com. Thought it was about time to get my head around all the CSS media query stuff if Ratehall is going to have a successful mobile web app.
It’s harder than I thought… no one made it easy for the mobile future of the web.
Anyway, this is how I did it:
<link rel="stylesheet" media="screen" href="standard.css" type="text/css" /> <!-- Basic CSS --> <link rel="stylesheet" media="only screen and (max-device-width: 480px)" href="phone.css" type="text/css" /><!-- Phone CSS --> <link rel="stylesheet" media="only screen and (max-device-width: 1024px)" href="tablet.css" type="text/css" /><!-- Tablet CSS --> <link rel="stylesheet" media="only screen and (min-device-width: 800px)" href="screen.css" type="text/css" /><!-- Desktop CSS -->
I’ve certainly not done a very elegant job, but it just about works. Anyone who knows better, let me know.

I don’t know about you, or your University or College, but the food here is pretty dire.
So dire, in fact, that there’s even a Facebook gallery dedicated to it; trust me – even these pictures don’t give full credit to its vileness.
It seems that not amount pestering by the JCR in the past has caused any significant improvement in the food ‘output’ (because it certainly is not ‘produced’).
Although, I must give credit to the JCR and Catering people for the recent Salad Bar improvements and that crazy Pronto Pasta Pesto thing…
We definitely have cheap food, which is good for students; I don’t think we’re even really complaining about the quality of food that we get. It’s OK, we understand the compromise; but some of it is just plain strange. The vegetable combinations are often crazy enough, but the mains can be even more extraterrestrial – I’m thinking of the chicken burger in a fajita.
The only thing that we thought could possibly make an improvement in these, frankly absurd dishes, would be if we could let the Catering people know what works and what really, really doesn’t. That way, even if the food we get isn’t great, it certainly won’t be those crazy concoctions. Well, here’s hoping.
So, there born was Ratehall – a new website for rating the food you have received every day. Sneakily, comments will be powered by another new website, BNTR, and it will all fall under an umbrella website – Camplus. Sorted.
Well…
Hello again everyone… clearly Exam term got the better of me – blogging was never really likely, was it.
Anyway, welcome back! (Though, I’m highly doubtful that anyone was ever here…) It’s summer now, so I’ve really no excuse not to fix up my websites. They are getting ooooolllldddd. Hopefully, if I manage it, there’ll be some new stuff on the way and ready for Michaelmas in October – can’t quite believe I’ve made it through a whole year at Uni. Crazy, crazy times…
Spreadfire got sold!? That seems pretty crazy too – turns out all this domain buying stuff, does turn out to be worthwhile. Though it would probably be more worthwhile if I had made anything of them before I sold them… So, that’s the plan for the summer – to actually make something of them. I know, I know – I say that every year, and nothing’s happened yet, but we’ll see.
Also, going to Boston Children’s Hospital – should be pretty good…
Yosemite Panorama
Thought I would share this, it’s on facebook but probably buried beneath millions of others and not at such high resolution. The original file is at an insanely high resolution but is 100s of mb.
PS: You’ll note when I get determined to blog there’ll be an excessive number of posts followed b a year long break, it’s just a thing I do.
Oh! I forgot to mention: Big Brother is returning to Channel 5. Not really sure what I think about that. C4 did very well with it, it was nice to see it end. I was completely addicted to it. I suppose the quality (some people would disagree that Big Brother is quality programming; it definitely is by the way) be the same (Endemol are still producing it). We’ll see if 5 can rekindle people’s love-hate relationship with it. Either way, I’m sure it will do wonders for Channel 5′s ratings.
Hello
Well I’m absolutely sure this will be thrilling news for everyone: I’ve decided to start blogging a bit again, and perhaps even tweeting.
Ok, ok, I’ll take it one step at a time.
I can’t believe how much I have neglected this blog, in fact all of my websites; I’ve barely looked at them since 2008! I am a terrible parent.
Also, it’s funny, the first blog post on here (though certainly not the first blog ever on Hamdev) was about my new Junior Form tutor group, 7CE. Well, not so junior anymore; they’re Year 11 now and will be getting their GCSE results this summer. I might pop in to see them, though that might be a bit strange. I wonder if they’ll remember their ‘About Me’ book they made to look back on themselves at the end of school…
I should say that blogging is merely going to be a more productive alternative to procrastination. (I hate that word by the way, I’ll be the first to admit that students are never procrastinating). It’s at least a nice distraction from revision.
Anyway, so many websites! I guess I should do something with them really, and I seem to keep accumulating them. What is going on? It’s like some kind of crazy addiction, albeit one that isn’t gong to damage my health too much, although who can be sure? I always say this at about this time of year, and every time I feel sure that I will follow it through: this summer I am going to sort out hamdev and the copious number of domains that I’ve got registered.
We’ll see.
